Skills you need: How Counselling skills give soothing effect to others?

Our graduate, Christiane, who is a Mindfulness Trainer, found Master of Counselling by Monash University very useful and shared what she learnt from it:

How do you think this programme helped with your work?

“Ethics was definitely a very important part of the program. The course provided me with a clear framework, which helped me establish clear professional boundaries with my clients. This module constantly highlighted the importance of mental flexibility, especially in an international and diverse environment such as Hong Kong. Awareness of this key element in counselling has helped to be respectful of my clients’ cultural background and apply professional ethics skillfully.”

What is your favourite module?

“My favourite module was Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as it provided me with effective tools to use in a hectic and goal-oriented place like Hong Kong. I love that it helps people find new ways to behave by changing their thought patterns. Reinforcing my CBT skills has given me the confidence to implement effective tools with people suffering from depression and anxiety.

For example, I have used CBT with a teenager having multiple anxieties and a phobia with planes. Combining CBT and mindfulness practices has been very effective in helping this client anchor himself in the present and let go of his fears.”

How did you ride out the challenges when facing covid-19?

“People in Hong Kong have been extremely disciplined with maintaining social distancing, a strict approach to hygiene in the city and taking responsibility for washing their hands and wearing masks.

As a family, we have had our share of challenges. Our daughter was sent back from Italy where she was an exchange student and was quarantined in government housing for 2 weeks. We were also worried for our son who works in a hospital on the front lines.

Overall, we feel lucky to be safe in a city that has an amazing health care system, responsible citizens who did the very best to keep the virus at bay and who were able to keep the death toll as one of the lowest of the world.

On a personal level, I felt fortunate to be able to use my long standing meditation practice as a tool to go inwards when I could not go outside. I was also able to keep working via Zoom, teaching mindfulness and counselling groups and individuals in these difficult times.

Even if the pandemic has been a challenge for our family and for myself, it is also an incredible life lesson giving me the opportunity to learn about my family, my friends, my clients and myself.”
